SUMMARY:CEC 100th Anniversary Series Dr. Daniel P. Hallahan and Dr. Paige C. Pullen-"The History and Future of Learning Disabilities: Advancing the Field through the 'Science of Reading'."
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Dr. Daniel Hallahan will provide an overview of the history of learning disabilities\, starting with European Foundation Period\, c. 1850-1920\, briefly covering the contributions of Broca\, Wernicke\, Broadbent\, Kussmaul\, Morgan\, and Hinshelwood. Next is the U.S. Foundation Period\, c. 1920-1960\, Orton\, Fernald\, Monroe\, and Kirk. Then\, the Emergent Period (c. 1960-1975)\, with involvement of Federal Task Forces and Parent (ACLD) and Professional Organizations (DLD). The Solidification Period (c. 1975-1985)\, with USOE Federal definition of 1977\, the establishment of five LD Institutes. \nDr. Hallahan will discuss the final period\, Tension Between Inclusion and Intensity of Instruction Period (c. 1985-present).  He will use data from the Annual Reports to Congress to trace the increase in the degree of inclusion from the 1990s to the present. He will emphasize how this trend has reached a point where it flies in the face of best practice\, which is to provide individualized intensive instruction. \nFrom there\, Dr. Paige Pullen will describe the professional development on the Science of Reading that she and the Lastinger Center at the University of Florida\, in partnership with the Florida DOE\, are bringing to thousands of teachers. She will describe the online matrix of modules sanctioned by the State as a way to achieve reading endorsement. She will describe her involvement in working with the DOE to secure funding ($200 million) for the New Worlds Reading Initiative: https://www.newworldsreading.com/fl/en/home.html \nNew Worlds provides the parents of all children who are reading below grade level free children’s books along with training on how to use them with their children using Science of Reading principles. \nDaniel P. Hallahan\, Ph.D.\, is a Professor Emeritus\, University of Virginia\, Charlottesville.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor.  His areas of expertise include learning disabilities\, ADHD\, autism\, intellectual disabilities\, blindness\, and deafness.  His early research focused on the development of cognitive strategy training for students with learning disabilities and ADHD.  Recently his research focused on the need for more individualized\, intensive special education instruction for students with disabilities.  Dr. Hallahan is the author of hundreds of professional articles and book chapters\, and he is the author and coauthor of more than 20 professional textbooks.  His work has been published in German\, Spanish\, Korean\, and Arabic.  Dr. Hallahan has taught countless preservice and in service undergraduate and graduate students as well as countless Ph.D. students.  He served as the first editor of Exceptionality and as a reviewer for Exceptional Children\, Learning Disability Quarterly\, The Journal of Special Education\, and Exceptionality.  He received numerous awards during his distinguished career as an educator\, researcher\, and for his service to our profession. \n \nPaige C. Pullen\, Ph.D. is the Chief Academic Officer- University of Florida’s Lastinger Center for Learning. Dr. Pullen’s current work focuses on developing and implementing scalable professional learning experiences to increase educators’ knowledge of reading instruction. Her research focuses on language and literacy interventions for vulnerable populations. Dr. Pullen has held appointments in University of Virginia’s Schools of Medicine (Pediatrics) and Education (Special Education). She has served as the Principal Investigator of myriad research projects\, authored books\, book chapters\, peer-reviewed articles\, and presented internationally on evidence-based reading instruction. She has conducted research and professional development across the USA as well as in Nigeria\, Zambia\, and Botswana\, Africa.  \n \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://illinoisstate.zoom.us/j/99374078610 \nMeeting ID: 993 7407 8610\nOne tap mobile\n+13126266799\,\,99374078610# US (Chicago)\n+13017158592\,\,99374078610# US (Washington DC) \nDial by your location\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 646 876 9923 US (New York)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\nMeeting ID: 993 7407 8610\nFind your local number: https://illinoisstate.zoom.us/u/adi0Zpjm1B \nJoin by SIP\n99374078610@zoomcrc.com \nJoin by H.323\n162.255.37.11 (US West)\n162.255.36.11 (US East)
