ICEC: The CEC 100th Anniversary Series #7-Dr. Dave L. Edyburn “Special Education Technology Past, Present, and Future”

February 10 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm CST

Dave Edyburn, Ph.D., is Senior Research Scientist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Most recently he served as Associate Dean for Research in the College of Community Innovation and Education at the University of Central Florida. His research and teaching interests focus on the use of technology to enhance teaching, learning, and performance; the nexus of human and machine learning; special education technology research; and universal design for learning. During 2021 he serves as President of the Pioneers Division of the Council for Exceptional Children. Dr. Edyburn has served as Editor of numerous professional journals, including: Journal of Research in Education, Learning Disability Quarterly, Remedial and Special Education, Special Education Technology Practice, and Teaching Exceptional Children. He is the Guest Editor for an upcoming special issue of Assistive Technology Outcomes and Benefits.

Special educators were among the early adopters of microcomputer technologies in the 1980s. As a result of the long-term investments in research and development, assistive technologies have emerged to become essential tools for fostering independence and enhancing quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Join us for this session where Dr. Dave Edyburn will provide an overview of the significant historical developments in special education technology, emerging trends impacting classrooms across the country, and a provocative glimpse of the future where technologies drastically alter the nature of individualized instruction.
